Fatal Industrial Accident at Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter




In the early hours of May 20, 2025, a fatal industrial accident occurred at the Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter in Hong Kong. A 61-year-old dock worker, surnamed Cheung, was struck by a snapped steel cable while working aboard a barge. The cable, connecting a tugboat to the barge, broke and lashed back, causing severe injuries. Cheung suffered an amputated arm and was found unconscious on the deck. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the cable failure. This tragedy highlights the inherent risks in maritime operations and the need for stringent safety protocols to protect workers in such hazardous environments.
